Jo Kinnard, Intern at Bethlehem 2010-2011
The purpose of internship is to provide pastoral candidates a learning environment in which they can both engage in the practice of ministry and reflect on the quality of their involvements under the direction of a supervising pastor and lay internship committee. Internship provides congregations a way to enhance and extend their ministries through the gifts of an intern. At the same time, internship brings the additional responsibility of providing honest and compassionate evaluation of an intern's abilities.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church has entered into a partnership with Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion, IA, for the academic year 2010-11, to be an internship site for Jo Kinnard, a seminarian from Wartburg Theological Seminary. As a congregation that understands the value and complexity of education for pastoral ministry, Bethelhem will support and provide opportunities for Jo to find her pastoral voice, and become thoroughly familiar with the practical side of being a pastor in terms of worship, pastoral care of congregants and the variety of ministry and missional contexts. A Lay Internship Committee comprised of five members of the Bethlehem congregation with accompany Jo in this journey of candidacy in this important third year of her seminary education, and complement the schooling she has received in her classes at the seminary.
